Great Moments in Teaching

There are just some days that I absolutely love teaching, and Friday was one of those days. It wasn't because it was Friday, but because I just had fun with my kids. Their personalities were very clear to me Friday. I saw them clearly that day. One particular student had all my first graders laughing including me during DOL (Daily Oral Language). We had our sentences on the board and the children were writing and correcting them in their notebooks. During this process this one particular student thought it would be funny to make little noises. I asked him to please stop and get back to work, and he respectfully stopped. A few minutes later he continued to make his noises. I told him for every noise he made I would take a minute of his recess. He looked at me wide eyed and began working. When it came time to correct the sentences aloud I called on several students to tell me the corrections they made and why. Well, this one little boy who had been making noises earlier raised his hand. When I called on him to tell me the correction he showed me just how very witty he was by mouthing the answer. I had forgotten that I had threatened to take his recess if he had made any more noise. We all just looked at him and he sat there with this very innocent smile. When I gave him permission to talk he answered, and we all laughed.

In the Class

We had a great talk from the secondary students who presented a dairy presentation. Since, we are a K-12 school we are fortunate to have FFA students come to our classes and teach students about agriculture first hand. They discussed how ice cream was made from dairy that comes from cows, and that the cream collected from the milk along with other ingrediants are used in making the ice cream we buy in stores. After the presentation they answered questions and had handouts for the students. The children really loved it, and enjoyed ice cream as a treat for being such good listeners.

Hey there!

Hello! Blogging is very new to me, but I will give it a shot. Those of you who know me know that I am a teacher, and a new one at that. I love to teach, but I love learning even more.
